When you receive an NDIS plan, you are asked how you would like your funding managed. Plan management is the option that sits between doing it all yourself and handing everything to the National Disability Insurance Agency. You decide which supports to use and who provides them, and a plan manager handles the payments, records and budget checks behind the scenes.

ABility Centre is that plan manager for participants across South Australia. We are a small, local team based in Gilles Plains, and our whole business is built around making NDIS funding easier to live with.

The Three Ways to Manage NDIS Funding

Every NDIS plan is managed in one of three ways, and many plans combine more than one. Understanding the difference helps you choose with confidence.

  • Agency managed: the NDIA pays providers directly. It is simple, but you can only use NDIS registered providers.
  • Self managed: you pay providers yourself and claim the money back. You get maximum flexibility, but you also carry all the paperwork and record keeping.
  • Plan managed: a plan manager pays providers for you. You can use registered and unregistered providers, and someone else looks after the administration.

What a Plan Manager Actually Does

It helps to picture the plan manager as the finance office for your NDIS plan. When a provider delivers a support, they send their invoice to us rather than to you. We check that the support is covered by your plan, that the price is within the NDIS limits and that there is enough funding in the right category. Then we claim the funds from the NDIS and pay the provider.

Alongside the payments, we keep a full record of every transaction, watch your budgets, and send you a statement each month. Our NDIS invoice processing and NDIS budget tracking pages go into each of those jobs in more detail.

Why Many Participants Choose to Be Plan Managed

The biggest reason is choice. Agency managed participants are limited to registered providers, which can mean waiting lists or missing out on a local therapist, cleaner or gardener who suits you perfectly. Plan management opens that door without asking you to become your own bookkeeper.

The second reason is peace of mind. Running out of funding part way through a plan is stressful. Having someone watch your spending, point out problems early and explain your options takes a lot of that worry away.

Who Pays for Plan Management?

The NDIS does. When plan management is included in your plan, it comes with its own dedicated funding, separate from the money for your daily supports. Our set up and monthly fees are paid from that funding, so you never receive a bill from us and your support budgets are not touched.

If your current plan does not include plan management, ask for it at your next planning meeting or reassessment. Explain that you would like to choose your own providers without managing the payments yourself.

Your First Month With ABility Centre

In the first few weeks, we focus on getting the foundations right. We record your budgets and any funding periods, confirm your list of providers and make sure each one knows where to send invoices. Once the first invoices arrive, we process them and keep you updated, so you can see the system working before your first monthly statement lands.

Most participants tell us that by the end of the first month, they have stopped thinking about invoices altogether. That is exactly the point.

How NDIS Plan Management Starts

Step 1

Check your plan

Look for plan management funding in your plan, usually listed under Capacity Building. If it is missing, ask for it at your next planning meeting.

Step 2

Get in touch

Call or email us. We will talk through your plan, answer your questions and send you a simple service agreement.

Step 3

We connect with the NDIS

Once you agree, we are linked to your plan so we can claim funds and pay providers on your behalf.

Step 4

Tell your providers

Ask your providers to send their invoices to ABility Centre. We will take it from there and keep you updated every month.

NDIS Plan Management FAQs

Is plan management the same as support coordination?

No. A support coordinator helps you find and organise supports. A plan manager handles the financial side, paying providers and tracking your budget. Many participants have both.

Will I lose control of my plan?

Not at all. You still choose which supports to use and which providers deliver them. We simply handle the payments and records you would otherwise do yourself.

Can only part of my plan be plan managed?

Yes. Some plans combine management types, for example plan managing most supports while self managing one category. We work with whatever arrangement your plan sets out.

How long does it take to get started?

Once plan management is in your plan and you have signed our service agreement, we can begin processing invoices as soon as we are linked to your plan by the NDIS.

What if I already have a plan manager?

You can change at any time. See our page on switching NDIS plan managers for a step by step guide.
